Hidden dangers of protein shakes you need to know – Healthy Builderz

Posted on December 23, 2022

Protein shakes are ideal for individuals who want to build more muscle and gain physical strength, as well as those who want to get rid of extra pounds by following a high-protein diet. This is due to the many benefits associated with eating protein shakes, which causes many people to consume them all the time, which causes them to get a lot more protein than their bodies really require.

The problem with drinking too many protein shakes is that there are actual risks associated with it, ranging from organ damage to weight gain!

So if you’re someone who’s never seen it without a tall glass of a protein shake, keep reading – below you’ll find some of the known hidden dangers of protein shakes that you may especially encounter if you tend to drink them more than you should.

But before that, let’s take a quick look at how much protein you really need to consume per day.

Health authorities say you should provide your body with 0.36 grams of protein per pound. This means that if you are a 150-pound person, your daily diet should contain 54 grams of protein overall. Fitness experts agree that you can actually increase your daily protein intake to 0.50 to 0.90 grams per pound if you’re trying to build more muscle or lose weight with a diet that recommends increasing your protein intake.

With protein shakes, it can be very easy for anyone to get more protein than they need — protein shake ads make it seem like if you drink more protein shakes, you’ll look prettier. Unfortunately, this is not the case. If you’re not careful, overdosing on protein shakes can actually wreak havoc on your overall health!

Here are some of the risks of consuming too many protein drinks that many people are not aware of:

overweight

Many people drink protein shakes to enjoy rapid weight loss, especially as part of a high-protein, low-carb diet. Unfortunately, many of these individuals are not aware of the fact that consuming lots and lots of protein shakes can actually cause weight gain instead of weight loss.

Protein that is no longer needed by the body is converted into fat just like excess amounts of carbohydrates. On top of that, a lot of nice protein drinks contain a lot of sugar.

If you think protein is all that’s in a cup of protein shake, think again. According to various independent testing laboratories, many of the brands and blends of proteins on the current market actually contain trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium!

Consuming too many contaminated protein shakes can easily lead to a buildup of heavy metals in your body, something that can lead to several life-threatening problems.

Kidney damage

Protein metabolism creates all kinds of waste products that must be eliminated from the body. This task is delegated to the kidneys—these bean-like organs in your body that filter by-products of protein metabolism from your bloodstream and excrete them from your body through your urine.

Unfortunately for those with kidney problems or at high risk for them, eating a high-protein diet can lead to some very serious health repercussions!

Digestive distress

Do you suffer from lactose intolerance? Then don’t be surprised why you seem to experience nausea, abdominal pain, excess gas and diarrhea after consuming a protein shake – protein shakes come from the lactose-containing part of milk referred to as “whey”.

This is why you should be very careful when shopping for a protein shake. Experts recommend whey isolate because it contains the least amount of lactose. Note that this type of protein shake contains minimal amounts of lactose and is not completely devoid of it, which means that it may still cause unfavorable symptoms related to lactose intolerance.
