Medical College of Wisconsin receives $50 million gift from Kern Foundation

The Medical College of Wisconsin announced Thursday that it had received $50 million from the Kern Family Foundation — the largest donation in the school’s history from a single donor.

The money will allow the school to continue its focus on transforming how it trains future doctors, an effort launched in 2017 with the foundation donating nearly $38 million to create the Robert D Institute. and Patricia E. Kern for Medical Education Transformation, also known as the Kern Institute.

“Right now, Americans don’t have the medical workforce that best matches our health care needs,” Kern Institute director Adina Kalet said in an interview. “There are many, many reasons for this, but part of it is because we have an education system that is not fully up to date and aligned with new challenges.”
