There’s a lot of debate about which meal is most important – in the US it’s generally considered breakfastbut in different countries of the world, the emphasis is on lunch and having dinner as well.

But according to Meghan Stoops, Dt.P. at Naked nutrition, none of that should matter. Instead of eating the traditional three big meals, the best eating habit for getting and maintaining a flat stomach is to eat between five and six small meals throughout the day.

“It helps keep your metabolism running at peak performance and prevent overeating throughout the day,” Stoops says. “In other words, it’s a simple way to reduce your overall consumption and still feel satisfied.”

This can be a difficult change for people who are more accustomed to eating three large meals throughout the day. To ease the transition, Stoops recommends continuing to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, but eating smaller meals and including two snacks between meals during the day.

She also says it’s important to include good sources of proteinas good as sources of fiber, at each meal to help maintain a feeling of satiety. According to a study 2018 from the UK The study indicates that a high-protein diet can be an “effective weight loss strategy” because it reduces hunger and increases energy expenditure.

One of the things that can keep a stomach from appearing flatter is bloatingand Stoops adds that eating smaller meals at a more frequent rate can help avoid bloating, as it avoids the heavy digestion the body goes through after consuming a large meal.

“If you’re prone to bloating, choosing small, frequent meals can help avoid the heavy digestive burden often caused by a large meal, eliminating the discomfort of bloating and gas,” says Stoops. “It’s much gentler on the stomach.”

In addition to helping relieve bloatingbeing kinder to the stomach according to Stoops and making it easier to work towards and maintain a flat stomach, eating several small meals throughout the day has also been linked to improved heart health, says one study 2019.

The study concludes that eating more than four meals a day can lead to improved cholesterol levels, which ultimately leads to better heart health and a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
