Making time for cardio in your regular routine isn’t a question, it’s a necessity. In addition to keep your heart and joints healthy, this form of exercise can improve everything from the function and condition of your lungs, pancreas and blood to the quality of your sleep. (Oh, and expect major energy and mood boosts!) Whether you’re biking, functioningswim or even jumping ropethere are reasons why you should make sure to do the right amount of cardio and incorporate just what is needed exercises in your routine. If you don’t, you could be doing your body more harm than good. For example, you’ll want to check out the following cardio habits that are aging you faster.
We spoke with Rob Wagener, a NASM-certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, who tells us the bad cardio habits you should stop doing ASAP. Read on to find out more and prepare to give them up.
Wagener explains that while doing high-intensity cardio is a great way to “get the heart rate up and the blood pumping” and will put you on the right path to losing weightit is important to be aware that this can strain your body.
“Like a car, running it at 100 mph all the time might seem like a good time, but it will eventually cause critical parts to fail faster and more likely to lead to more frequent injuries,” Wagener says, adding, ” Low-intensity cardio, such as slow walking or running, can produce weight loss results by burning calories while giving your body a break from fast-paced activities.”
When you think of cardio, running, stair climbing, and treadmill training, you probably think. These exercises can shape and tone hard-working muscles. That’s great, but Wagener cautions, “Too much lower-body cardio can leave the upper body under-conditioned.”
So don’t forget to show your upper body some attention too! Wagener explains that you can do this by researching “ways to increase your heart rate through upper body movement.” Battle ropes are a great work out tool if you want to train your upper body through cardio. You can also grab a set of lightweight dumbbells, which Wagener says work a bit faster and give you the results you’re looking for. “When it comes to cardio, remember it’s a whole-body workout,” Wagener points out.
If you have ever had joint pain or suffer from joint pain on a regular basis, you know this is a problem that is definitely making you feel older. As Wagener points out, “Nothing will age a person faster than aching joints. Being unable to move fluidly due to pain or joint restriction is no fun.”
That’s why it’s important to make sure you don’t damage your joints by doing too many inappropriate workouts. Wagener tells us, “When it comes to cardio, keep in mind that low-impact cardio can be just as effective for your body as high-impact cardio, but it will exert less pressure and hit the joints. .”
For example, consider working out occasionally on an elliptical on top of the treadmill. If that’s not your thing, how about a water-based workout? As Wagener explains, swimming is an incredible, low-impact, full-body cardio workout that’s gentle on your joints and will burn calories.
When it comes to leaving the house for your workout, Wagener says getting outdoors is one of the best types of cardio workouts because of the health benefits and overall enjoyment. However, when it comes to cardio habits that make you age faster, the latter is a major no-no.
Wagener warns: “The sun can wreak havoc on the skin. Too much sun exposure for long periods of time can lead to advanced skin aging, wrinkles, sunburn or, even worse, skin cancer. .”
To avoid these issues, he insists on wearing proper protection to “protect your skin from the elements.” That way, you’re not putting your skin’s health at risk in order to burn calories. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
